Online California Criminal Records

By Claire Dowell

It is the task of the Department of Justice, Office of the Attorney General to maintain California Criminal Records. Citizens are given the privilege to request the files, thanks to the Freedom of Information Act. Included in the files are important details like the full name of the criminal, crime committed, and when and where it was committed. In cases where the criminal is proven not guilty of a certain crime filed against him or her, that information will not be exposed to the public.

Any member of the general public is allowed to place a request for criminal documents for the purpose of checking the information included in their documents. If there are any incorrect pieces of information found in the document, the owner may request to have it reviewed and appropriately changed. A Claim of Alleged Inaccuracy or Incompleteness form is available at the Department of Justice. Supply all the necessary details and send it back to the department. Also send back the acquired copy of a criminal file.

To begin a search, get the Live Scan form at the Department of Justice. Supply all vital information and then have your fingerprint scanned at an authorized live scan operator. You will then be given a fingerprint card which you will need to present when you submit your request. On the day that you submit your request, submit altogether the completed Live Scan form, your fingerprint card, a government-issued ID, and money for the fees. Different fees apply for acquiring the documents and for having your fingerprint scanned. You can do a federal level search by heading straight to the California Federal Bureau of Investigation. If you want to do a search on a county level, you may also do so by heading to the exact arresting agency where the criminal documents were originally filed.

It is allowed to access the documents of other individuals but only on special situations. Law enforcers can get access if they need it for an investigation. Landlords are given access so they can have a better idea on their possible tenants. Employers usually access the files when they want to gain some knowledge on their applicants, especially if they want to know if they have done anything against the law or not. Citizens can only access the documents of other citizens if the reason is to conduct a background check; however, only the basic pieces of information are revealed.

If you are looking for another way to acquire criminal files, you can look them up from online search tools that cater to supplying them to the public. You can look for such over the Internet, just be careful with which one you choose because there are fake ones. Initiate a history check on a few that you consider on using so you have a better idea on whether they are capable of supplying genuine information or not. Try to see if past users are contented with their service.

There are two types of online service providers: fee-based and those that provide Criminal Records Free To Public. Fee-based service providers usually have the ability to provide extensive versions of the records, which means they can get you a lot of information, while free service providers usually just provide the basics. Once you obtain the records you want, make sure you do not use it to defame, embarrass, harass, or blackmail other people or else you will be punished accordingly by the law.
