Emergency Communications And Survival Help

By Eric Holm

What are your plans for communications in an emergency situation? This should be a question asked in any emergency preparedness plan whether it's for your family, office, warehouse, shop, hospital, stadiums or other large event gatherings, church, schools, etc...

Something as simple as watching the news can make it abundantly clear that a communication plan is important. A flood, fire, hurricane, or earthquake can hit at any time, at any place. When this happens, those who are prepared will be in a much better position to end up safe and sound. Remember that traditional methods of communication, such as traditional land lines and mobile phones, tend to stop working during these calamities. The electricity also tends to go down. Because of this, having the right plan, tools, and other supplies is extremely important.

It is comforting to know that most people won't be affected by a hurricane in Florida or an earthquake in California, or a tornado in Kansas. However, it is also impossible to predict disaster. Therefore, it is best to be prepared. Build your emergency communications kit before something happens that might necessitate the need for it. In the event of a complete failure of land and cell phone technology, you will need a way to communicate with your family, friends and neighbors. In this situation you would be best served by a bull horn, hand held radios and survival whistles. Being able to convey your position through the use of sound is invaluable in an emergency.

It is especially important to create a plan for the family just in case. Once again, a bullhorn, hand held radios, and whistles can be a good place to start when creating your plan. Another important piece of equipment is an am/fm solar powered radio, or a transistor radio. Go ahead and look for models that have speakers to help stay up to date with news and other relevant information. Radios are absolutely vital for catching the latest warnings and updates. For instance, knowing that certain roads are blocked or closed, or where emergency personnel can be found, may be impossible without a radio.

Remember that some of these types of radios come equipped with a siren. This is another potentially life-saving item to have in a survival kit. Simply being able to create noise and draw attention to yourself is key, especially if you find yourself trapped. Remember that preparation may seem trivial, but it has saved many lives.
