By Claire Dowell

In 1983, the Indiana Access to Public Records Act was passed and implemented in the state. This particular act mandates the local government of the state to allow its local residents the freedom to access their personal files which includes the Indiana Public Arrest Records. The Department of Public Safety in the state is the one responsible for keeping track of such documents.

Residents of Indiana would request for a copy of an arrest record to conduct a background check. It is one of the major sources of information when checking on the criminal history of an individual. Such background check is done by employers. The criminal history of their people is checked to ensure that they have people who can be trusted. This is done regularly to prevent mishaps within the company.

As the name suggest, arrest records in Indiana contains details about the arrest of the person involved. One will also know information about when, where and how the arrest was done since it is also indicated on the file. It would not be a complete document without the name of the reported individual as well as other personal information about the person. To make the document a lot more helpful, the state has made the details of the person's appearance open to the public.

Requesting for a copy of an Indiana arrest record would require a processing fee to be paid. Depending on the type of request made, the cost can vary. To proceed with the search, one has to know the basic details of the document of interest since it will be used to conduct the search. Although the document is considered as a public file, access to the document is still limited to the person on the file. When a need to access the records of other people, one may need to secure a court order to do so. It is also important that the one who filed the request provide their personal information to proceed with the request.

Arrest records as well as other criminal records in the state of Indiana can be obtained from the office of the Department of Public Safety. One can also request for a copy of such document at the local county office where the incident has been reported. Unfortunately, the files at the county office are not as complete as that of the archive found in the state office. The county can only provide records of incidents which are covered by the scope of the county. Mail request is also possible but can take a while.

To avoid the long wait and to speed up the retrieval process, residents of Indiana prefer to do the request online. Police records together with the arrest files of the state can be obtained without spending much energy since the request can be done even without leaving the comforts of one's own home. The search can be done anywhere there is Internet access and the results are displayed in just seconds instead of days.
