Loss Prevention Help For Business Owners

By Mark Mahaffey

If you are the owner of your business, then you are likely familiar with the threat of shoplifting. But are you aware of how much money is lost in businesses each year due to shoplifting? That figure may be as high as twenty five million dollars! This sends a clear message to business owners!

It is important first to realize that taking theft seriously is crucial. The fact is that there are some people who make it their goal to steal from others. It is wise to educate yourself regarding the common characteristics of shoplifters. Studying the personalities of thieves can help you protect yourself.

For example, people in your store who are thinking about stealing from you may act in specific ways. They may have a guilty look about them. They may absentmindedly pick up objects and put them back down.

Also, a potential thief may come into your store several times a day. This may be his way of becoming more familiar with your store as he makes his plans to steal from you. You may even notice this person looking around at the employees and the layout of the store more than the merchandise.

Here is something to try to protect yourself from shoplifting: have a designated dressing room worker. It is easy to steal things while in dressing rooms. You see, a person can hide things in their purses, bags or even in their own clothing.

This is an easy problem to solve. Assign one of your employees to work the dressing room. Give her number tags to assign to each person, so that the number on the tag matches the number of items he or she is taking inside the dressing room to try on. They just need to make sure that the numbers match before the customer leaves the dressing room area.
