Guidelines For Oilfield Protection Compliance

By Rebecca Cooper

There are a lot of health and safety hazards in oilfields. This is as a result of the flammable oils and gases that are used in this industry. Therefore, relevant safety measures should be considered as highlighted by most safety and protection authorities. Here are a couple of guidelines for oilfield protection compliance that one should take into consideration.

Install alert systems for different risks. Gases and fire exposure are the most common risks in this industry. Companies should consider installing alert systems that detect and alert the workers against this risks. Fire emergency systems should have automatic extinguishing systems that can reduce the fire from spreading out and switching off crucial equipment automatically. Gas detectors should measure the level of the toxic gas and alert the workers about this risk.

Consider having continued housekeeping. Areas which are common with employee traffic are supposed to be kept in good condition to avoid falling and tripping. Therefore, spills must be cleaned immediately and unnecessary objects ought to be kept away from the common areas. Make sure that there is enough supply of all the housekeeping items within the areas that are common with these risks.

Safeguarding against falls. Workers are usually required to access high points while working in an oilfield. In that case, relevant safety precautions should be considered to avoid falls while the workers are climbing elevated equipment. Workers are expected to be provided with toe-boards that prevent falling and injuries, use safety harness and nets and guard all the floor holes. The employees should be trained in these aspects using a language they can understand.

Take note of the signage procedure. There are chances of risks in a workstation that does not have relevant communication measures. Therefore, proper signage should be adopted to reduce risks that are as a result of poor communication. The signs should be kept in relevant areas and employ all the aspects required to make them relevant enough. This includes the use of color codes, the right shape, words, and sizes. The signs are required to be reassessed when there is a project shift.

Ensure that the health of the employees is monitored. Having a negative mental culture among employees can as well contribute to the health risks in an oil workstation. For that reason, teamwork exercises are highly recommended since they provide an avenue for communication and building trust among them. Therefore they can freely express their views using the right channels without fear of being reprimanded.

Protection against ergonomic hazards. The personal health of every worker ought to be considered as well. This include provision of objects to assist them in lifting heavy items and using different tools. The employees are supposed to be provided with the right machines required for lifting heavy items and protective clothing for performing different activities. Besides that, they should be trained in proper lifting methods that will not harm their health conditions.

Ensure continuous employee training. Ongoing training of the employees is important since they can learn how to observe various safety measures. The training must be done in multiple aspects such as how to operate fire protection machines, providing instructions materials and performing safety drills. You should as well place evacuation directions that can be used to exit a workstation during an emergency.
