By Elinor Fowle

Power windows and doors are inventions that are nothing short of remarkable. Now, however, they have become so common that a lot of people do not remember their lives without them. Everything comes easy and at the mere touch of a button.

You push a button and you expect your power door locks to work without fail. Unfortunately, that is not always the case.

It is usually a worn actuator that causes power door locks to stop functioning. This is a component that consists of gears, a motor, and a special cable that retracts and extends when the doors are locked and unlocked.

There are a number of reasons why these components begin to wear down and stop functioning. For one thing, they may not be receiving the electrical currents they require for movement. Sometimes the mechanical parts within the actuator start to wear down.

Every door has an actuators, but the one of the driver's side is often the first to wear out given that this door is used the most frequently. In instances in which each of the doors are no longer working, there is a good chance that the electrical current is failing to every door. If you don't have either a defective switch or a blown fuse, the problem could lie within the door itself and this means that the door will need to be taken apart and its actuator must be replaced.

Depending on the make of the car, the price for replacing an actuator can be up to $100 including labor. In some vehicles it can go as high as $700 to replace an actuator, especially at a car dealership, depending on what the problem is.

Regardless of what the problem is with your door lock, the secret to getting your fixed and working properly is to find a reliable auto mechanic who is trained to determine these kinds of problems and is skilled at fixing them. The most reliable shops can be found via word of mouth, but social media is great for finding someone good too.
