Tips On How To Get Into Ivy League Colleges

By Olivia Cross

Getting into a prestigious college or university is not easy. Every year, these schools have thousands and thousands of students applying for a limited number of places. Learning how to get into ivy league colleges is about being organized and knowing what steps to take along the way.

The Ivy League includes Brown, Harvard, Columbia, Dartmouth, Cornell, the University of Pennsylvania, Yale and Princeton universities. Many of these schools are among the top ten colleges in the U. S. They consistently achieve the top spots in national college rankings, which is why they are so sought after by students.

Many parents are willing to pay tens of thousands of dollars in tuition and fees to get their son or daughter into one of these exclusive colleges. This is because it is widely believed that a degree from one of these institutions will help a person to be more successful and advance faster in their careers.

You will also have to write an admissions essay. You will generally be asked by the college to write an essay on a very broad topic. This will give the admissions team some insight into how you think and who you are as a person. The essay is important because in some cases it may be the deciding factor as to whether a college accepts the student or not. Make sure that you put a lot of thought into it and proofread it well.

Many parents hire special counselors or admissions coaches who claim to be able to increase the chances of getting their child accepted. Many of these counselors are former admissions administrators at Ivy League schools, so they may have some insider knowledge that families can use. However, every child and every application is different.

If you do not want to take the SAT, you can take the ACT exam instead; however, most Ivy League colleges look for SAT scores. Many high school students achieve perfect scores on the SAT, so you need to ensure that your score is as high as possible if you want to be admitted to the more competitive colleges.

If you are a parent that believes that a private counselor is a good idea, make sure that whomever you choose is a member of a valid counseling association, such as the Independent Educational Consultants Association or the National Association for College Admissions Counseling. Also, make sure that you choose someone who will work to find the best fit for your son or daughter, and not simply push a particular school for its reputation.

Remember that there are many good colleges and universities in Stamford, CT and other places, so high school seniors should not feel that they all need to get into this small group of schools only. The students who want to be chosen must have a good admissions plan. They must also have a strong student profile and lots of helpful advice from teachers and counselors.
