Guidelines To The Best College Counselor Greenwich Parents Will Find Useful

By Olivia Cross

If you are a parent and your son or daughter is just about to join college, you may want to bring in a counselor to talk to him/her. Once you decide to engage a counselor on this, the next step should be to identify a good one. The problem however lies in finding the best counselor for your son or daughter. In the quest to find a good college counselor Greenwich parents should always adhere to the below discussed tips.

You are obviously not the first person seeking to engage a college therapist in your neighborhood neither are you the last. In other words, there are several other students who have worked with counselors in the past. Ask them what their experiences with the counselors they used were like and whether they would recommend them to you. This way, you will be able to come up with a list of very competent counselors to choose from.

Once you come up with a list of potential counselors either through referrals or online search, the next step is thin the list so that you are left with the best one. Consider things like experience in the field. You should choose someone with at least five years of active practice as college therapist. This is not the time to volunteer yourself as guinea pig for a novice.

Unless you are a very rich student, you will also want to compare rates from various counselors. However, you need to bear in mind that just like it is always the case when buying any product or service, you only get what you pay for. In other words, the cheapest provider might not be the best choice for you.

Just like it is the case with other service providers like lawyers and physicians, it is a requirement by law that such counselors be licensed before they start practicing. It is therefore upon you to verify that your potential provider is licensed before committing to him/her. Furthermore, it will be easier to trace a licensed provider in case of malpractice than tracing one who is not licensed.

You also want your therapist to be qualified. Being qualified here means that he/she should posses a university degree. Nowadays, there is a tendency of people just going through weekend training and start calling themselves counselors. In addition to the university degree, it will also be an added advantage if you can find a therapist with certification from one of the well known professional bodies.

The therapist you choose should also have clean record. Contact the relevant local authority to see if there have been any complaints against the said therapist. While such complaints might be normal, the way in which they are resolved also matter a lot. They should always be resolved to the clients satisfaction.

With a good college counselor by your side, you will be able to make the right decisions as far as your college education is concerned. As can be seen, finding a good therapist is not something you will be able to achieve over night. It is therefore important that you start the search early as well.
