Ways For Citizens To Increase Human Trafficking Awareness

By Ronald Roberts

It is unfortunate that people are still being bought and sold in order to provide free or cheap labor. This vice should have died centuries ago but it continues underground. It takes bold citizens to raise human trafficking awareness and bring the issue to an end. What steps can an ordinary citizen take in order to contribute to the elimination of the vice?

Learn how humans are trafficked and the indicators that a person is a victim. This makes it easier to identify a victim and take necessary step. You need to actively search for interactive sessions on the topic and seminars or symposiums. You will learn of the metamorphosis that is causing the problem to remain hidden.

Make inquiry about the items like foodstuff you are consuming. Ask who picked the fruits you are about to buy. This is called tracing the footprints of slavery. You will see some goods that are produced by child labor. This also forces companies to declare that they are not using child labor or slavery in their production processes. Such actions make everyone aware of the dangers lurking in the society.

Volunteer in events where anti-trafficking discourse is taking place. Corporate organizations and community groups organize these activities on regular basis. The activities that take place at community level include fund raising, seminars, walks and talks. They are aimed at raising awareness at grassroots. It is also an opportunity to involve your friends and neighbors.

Push your representatives at county, state and federal level to raise awareness. They should also support legislation that are geared towards solving the problem. Beyond participating at national level, the leaders must support global efforts towards ending human trafficking and slavery.

Local schools and religious organizations also play a part at grassroots to raise awareness. Children are especially helpful because they form the leaders of tomorrow. Their minds are still clean and will therefore participate with a clean heart. Since they are usually the main target, they find it easier to identify with the campaign.

Keep up with legislation on the issue and emerging issues that would be of interest. Catch the latest news by subscribing to alerts on websites that run such campaigns. The alerts you receive will make your campaign more effective. You also get to share these alerts with peers and team members.

Encourage businesses by making them aware that they can provide jobs, internships and opportunities to survivors. This means that they will set up infrastructure that prevents such occurrence. Supporting survivors is one of the ways to help build a system that is solution oriented. Friends and neighbors should also be made aware of the contribution they can make towards this end.

Engage professionals at all levels to raise awareness on the issue. For instance, students can present papers that raise more awareness. Journalists can run stories relating to this issue as part of their programs and news. Health care providers should be alert in case a patient comes without necessary papers and appears to be a victim. Attorneys can provide representation while law enforcers hunt for perpetrators. This makes the fight a community issue and increases the chances of success.
