Ethical USA Children's Clothing Shop Uses Organic Fibers

By Bertulda Zerna

We're all concerned about the environment. Pesticide use is one of the major concerns - and traditional cotton uses a lot of pesticides and herbicides. Buying children's clothing made with organic cotton has a number of advantages.

For one thing, organic cotton appears to be softer - better for the sensitive skin of young children. Normal cotton can sometimes contain pesticide and herbicide residues, despite washing. Some children may be allergic to these chemicals (Although, of course, cotton itself can be an allergen - but many people who think they are allergic to cotton are allergic to dyes or formaldehyde introduced during processing).

There are many environmental benefits to organic fibers. Traditional cotton account for approximately 25% of the insecticides, and roughly 10% of all other pesticides, used worldwide, though they only use about 3% of the total cultivated lands. Farmers raising chemical free crops tend to be healthier and can produce their products cheaper. Organic cultivators use beneficial insects and innovative machinery to get the best results.

By purchasing organic materials, consumers are contributing to increasing the general demand for the product, which limits the number of harvesters working the fields getting sick from pesticides, and reducing the average price of organic cotton fabrics and clothes overall.

Even if there are no recent studies that show end users gain health advantages from using organic fabrics, consumers who purchase them are benefiting the well being of those who work the farms and the environment, while showing other cultivators that they can create marketable products without the use of pesticides and chemicals.

Also, organic cotton is often of higher quality and more durable, especially if organic dyes are also used (traditional dyes can weaken the fabric). So, next time you go to buy your child a t-shirt, look for one made with organic cotton. It is worth the slightly higher price.
