Why You Should Have Quality Tower Crane Certification

By Iva Cannon

Cranes help lift and lower or move large and over-sized objects horizontally in locations like construction sites. A tower crane operator ensures that the machines are moved safely and checks if they are operating properly. Operating cranes requires formal training. A tower crane certification Kingston, TN equips you with the necessary knowledge and skill needed to maneuver these machines and determine if they are functioning in the right manner.

Cranes should only be operated by technicians who have been certified. While the machines lift heavy objects, they also have potential for causing devastating tragedies if they are not maneuvered the right way. An operator should learn more on lifting objects, maintaining balance, setting up cranes, and observing safety precautions when in operation.

Operators of cranes also conduct inspections in every shift to make sure the machines are working properly. These are the people on ground and they know much about cranes. They are the ones to help others understand the need to observe safety precautions in such sites. During the closing of a shift, shut down procedures and securing of cranes is needed.

If you are leaving the machine unattended, you as the operator should make sure that the securing process is done as recommended by the manufacturer whether it is a normal or emergency thing. Prior to lifting any load, operators should verify that the load is within the recommended or rated capacity.

Moreover, operators are required to know about the lift requirements including determining the working height, load radius, boom length, load weight, travel clearance, crane capacity, and extension of outriggers or crawlers and stabilizers. The counterweights requirements are also important aspects to learn. Operators also learn about the stability and balance of cranes. When setting up cranes, they should be erected in stable grounds.

Before the machines are operated, operators have to check on the ground to make sure that it is stable. Conditions where cranes have been mounted can change including the stability of soils. The grounds may have voids or unstable soils, which may make them trip resulting to swinging of loads. If the operators are a not able to determine such problems, they may risk causing accidents.

For cranes to operate in stable conditions, the grounds should be firm and well drained to allow for sufficient support. Proper use of blocking, cribbing, crawlers, outriggers, mats, and other parts that affect the ability of surfaces to handle heavy loads during operation is needed. Accidents can be minimized when operators are able to identify and evaluate any possible hazards that may arise.

Hazards associated with access to job sites, transport clearance, and underground utilities have to be identified to prevent accidents. Choosing the right institution to train on crane operations is important. This is because, if you do not get proper training, you may not be able to handle the machines properly. The trainees should be exposed to real time working conditions to do practicals and understand in-depth on how such machines are operated before they are through with the training.
