What You Should Know About Certified Nurse Anesthetist Programs

By Harriet Porter

The invention of anaesthetics has helped in easing medical procedures for a long time. Many deaths and complications however have also been attributed to misuse of these drugs. For this reason, there arose a need to streamline entry into the profession of anaesthetic administration. As a result, people wishing to specialise in these duties must pursue certified nurse anesthetist programs offered by accredited institutions.

Gaining entry into the anaesthetics profession requires people who have acquired at least a bachelor degree in nursing or related fields and they must possess a nursing licence. The aspiring persons must also have hands on experience in handling patients in emergency rooms or intensive care unit for not less than one year. Afterwards, going through a nursing anaesthetics accreditation program and eventually sitting a national licensure examination renders one qualified enough.

Different institutions may stipulate their own criteria for admission. However, the three main conditions that one must have are a degree, licence, and experience, which remain the same everywhere. At this time, people who have experience in neonatal or paediatrics are also allowed to pursue the program. But, those who handle adults especially in health centres are better placed at coping with the demands of the course.

A candidate has to go through an interview first before gaining entry. This may be conducted either by the program coordinator or by a panel, and it involves two or three stages. The person might be informed lightly about what is going to be covered in the session. Most institutions however do not provide any clues.

The candidate is usually taken through two or three sessions before he or she is deemed fit to proceed. Most institutions will not inform their candidates in advance of anything about the contents of the interview. A few may however furnish you with some clues. Whichever way they choose, their main goal is to ensure that they are admitting the right person. Interviewers are mostly interested in life perception of a candidate.

In fact, most of the questions posed by the interviewers will not be directly related to the technical aspects of the field. Interviewers are also very much interested in writing skills of candidates. Since most of the assignments issued will involve writing, no one would want to slow down their work by marking poorly disorganised work. It is also hard to consider such people when there are many other better applicants.

Some time back, institutions used to rely on a graduate record examination scores. Today however, most of them have factored in short essay assignments as part of the interview. Because there are very many people currently seeking to be admitted to these programs, the slots are becoming even limited. Those with the best curriculum vitae therefore are the most advantaged.

However, involvement in other activities such as community missions is also vital at indicating interest to serving humanity. Today, the number of patients requiring surgery is high. It is only appropriate that people who offer these services are also competitive enough in order to save more lives. Those who are planning to take up these programs should ensure that they are prepared enough so as to achieve their best.
