Spalted Maple Burl, Effortless Aesthetics

By Ronald Evans

It is common knowledge that trees are cut everyday because people use materials made from it on a daily basis. Every single day, there is a large number being taken, depending on the need of the consumer. They are delivered to various firms so that they can be processed and utilized as materials for many goods on the market.

Even the ones you can consider as rotten or decaying. Especially those kinds. Mostly because spalted maple burl is so hard to find. And widely popular too, aside from the fact that it is highly durable. It is an interesting effect of nature, beautiful in it its very destruction. It is rotten, but in a good way because that is what makes it splendid.

It is part of how it decays and individual patterns are often unpredictable. Aside from that, there are many factors affecting this process. Like the weather for example or the temperature that can attribute to how trees or wood responds to it. The environment also is overall a big contributing factor.

You cannot just fight nature when it takes its course. That is why most of the time, when a log is processed, there is only a small part that allows for this procedure. What remains will go back to the ground and deteriorate like it should. Then it will be useless.

This can also be attributed to humidity, climate and temperature which is still fine because it would still be creating the same effect. When a log is processed, it doe not usually give out the same thing because this procedure can be limited. Most makers can go on walks to the woods without finding anything.

Spalting can actually be attributed to the weather and temperature. The wood attracts fungal attack. That is just how it is. After which, the fungus creates a pattern, staining the wood in a color like champagne when it is already decaying. Rotten yes, ugly no. It is by this process that the interesting marks on them are made.

With the elevation it allows for furniture are ideal for placing things on them easily. Sure any species of wood will eventually decay under natural conditions, but some have the ability to look and age beautifully. Since the sugar maple kind is quite difficult to work around with, the possibilities of it getting soft by spalting is lesser.

If he is lucky enough, he may be able to come across one log that has it which will give him something to do for the next few days. That is also why they make a good and distinct accent on furniture, especially doors and cabinets. It adds elegance and class on the design and aesthetically, it becomes the selling point of that item.

So much has been gained from spalting, thanks to nature. Oftentimes, people ignore that it is not a man made creation. Its beauty in design encompasses other materials that men have spent so much time and effort creating. That is what makes it a favorite among those who know what they want in their homes, or in the world of interior design.
