Alternatives That Can Be Used To The Prisoner Seat Belt

By Linda Smith

Prisoners and officers have to interact on a daily basis and at times, injuries have resulted out of these interactions. When they are being journeyed from one location to another, there are instances where officers have been hurt, and the prisoners fled. Hence, laws have been adjusted, and their environment changed. One of the changes includes the use of prisoner seat belt technique which ensures the safety of officers and minimizes the risks of escaping.

Under normal circumstances seat belts are used for crash protection hence the belts should have fastening retractors so as to give room for passengers to be able to move without any hindrance returns to its normal position keeping one locked up. However, the inmates use a different technique to prevent any danger that may be posed to the officers.

The manual system is used to offer crash protection as well as lessen the possibility of any risk to the officers. This system keeps them lying down normally on the back seat thus free movement is restricted. However, physicians have issued concerns about the health effects it has such as the development of handcuff neuropathy which is a condition that injures the nerves on the wrist.

However, several alternatives may be used to enhance security. First you may tightly seat them. Ensure you tightly handcuff the hands and move them to the front. It reduces the possible chance of the inmate sliding to the front. Also, it mitigates any possible chance of escaping.

Hooding is also another technique that may be used. It works by putting a hood over the prisoners head. This may be used against the handcuffs and belting reducing any chances of movements and while driving it is advised to make many turns so as to confuse them. The hood makes the senses of the prisoner to shut off making him freeze and not be aware of his surrounding. Also, blindfolding may also be used.

Another technique is the vesto strip which is two strips. One used to fasten the chest area and the other the lower limb part. These strips produce noise once there are any movements hence if the inmates move you can notice and keep a close eye on them for any suspicious movements.

Boy straps may come in handy. They are placed all over the the detainee and on the anterior chair to pin the hand properly in the middle of the body and chair. Wobbling may also be considered. Tie the convicts limbs to the thighs using a rope and keep doing frequent checks to make sure they are not extremely restrained.

Inspection mirrors should be placed at strategic places so s to observe movements of the inmate During transfers make careful observations so as to be keen. In the case, you suspect anything drive to a safe place and stop.

Back should always be there when there is an inmate of high-risk nature being transported. It is advised to travel with a fellow officer, who should be seated at the back of the prisoner. However if the backup person is not in the same vehicle as the officer and the prisoner, then they should be in another vehicle following close behind in any case of emergency
