Data On What Makes A Good Supervisor

By Marci Nielsen

Being given with a higher position does not mean that you can already rub this around the faces of other people. So, be more responsible with your actions and treat this as a chance for you to be more of a person. You now have the power to dictate the future of an individual. Try not be so lenient with that.

Be the person that anyone would not be afraid to approach to. What makes a good supervisor is not about defining the line that separates you from your workers. It is about letting them know that you are there whenever they need anything and that you can help if it is not much of an inconvenience for you.

Be a good example. Come to work early even when you have a higher position. This can make your workers feel that they are not being cheated upon. Besides, the earlier you come, the earlier you would be able to leave for you to continue living a normal life. You need to unwind too for you to be happy.

Be creative with your incentive program. It has to be something that will continuously surprise your team. Give them a weekly inspiration for them to voluntarily keep themselves from temptations. Self control may not be taught but you can always inspire this virtue with some movie tickets or free food.

Try not to be afraid to discipline your workers no matter how close you are to them. This is the time when they have to see that you are still their boss. So, give a verbal warning, a written document on the third offense and suspension on the fifth. Do this gradually for you to promote fairness and for the group to take this seriously.

Be a teacher. Teach them everything that they need to know for them to get better at what they do for a living. Let them talk to you about their difficulties and give them some tips on how they can be less bored and more productive. Provide them with constructive criticism and let them know that you mean well.

Put more value to your group members. Let them rest when there is nothing left to do. Also, let them have a vacation once in a while. All of you can even go on a trip together. This will let you bond more and promote unity.

Adapt to their different personalities. You may not like all of them but you still have to put up with their antics and show how versatile you can be. Also, be careful with your usual jokes since some people may be too sensitive to that even when they do not talk about it.

Communicate everything that is one your mind. If you believe that these people can do better, motivate them by telling them your personal feelings. Let them see you more as a person for them to have no problem opening up with their different concerns as well. Always make this a reciprocal pattern.
