It is even dubbed today as black gold, as they rake in millions worth of profits as it is a crucial substance in modern economy. Those who think they have found such a treasure mine waste no time in buying drilling rigs for sale and other related equipment.

A drilling rig is a machine that creates holes in the ground. It is essential for oil rich companies, as they are used to extract the said substance from under the ground. They can be as big as a tower or they can be small enough to be operated by one person. These small ones are more commonly known as augers.

As aforementioned, a drilling rig is a machine that bores holes. Through these holes, black gold is drawn out, processed, and then exported to petroleum users all over the world, especially oil companies who sell them off to motorists and others who may need them. They also come in various sizes, according to the level of need by the one who has to use it.

These tools also come in a variety of sizes, all depending on the kind or level of need of the one who will have to utilize it. For drilling small holes, an auger is typically used because it can be easily manipulated by a single individual. These small ones have high mobility due to their compact sizes, and is mostly the pick for environmental investigation and mineral exploration undertakings.

They can also be relatively humongous that it is very much impossible for one person to operate it alone. These big monsters can bore holes in the ground, be it thousands of meters deep into the crust of the planet. These are mostly used for oil related uses.

They are not only used to draw oil from underneath though, contrary to what the majority of the public may be thinking. They can be used to make wells for that fresher supply of water from underground. They can also be used in the extraction of natural gas. Installation of sub surface structures such as tunnels and other utilities also need a rig to do the first step in their installment procedures.

Rigs also come in a variety of forms according to need. Those that are permanently and firmly planted on solid ground are called land rigs. These are extensively used in every oil venture and undertaking.

There are also those which are mounted on something else, in the absence of good old solid earth. This particular type is known by everyone as the barge rig. The drill is conveniently perched on a barge for easy shallow water drilling.

Offshore rigs do not stand on land, neither are they mounted onto a moving vehicle nor vessel. Two known offshore types include the platform and semi submersible rigs. The former features the rig that is mounted on a secure platform of concrete or steel. The submersible type can still function even when immersed in water up to ten thousand feet.
