You Can Use Fire Alarms To Increase Your Business Security

By Mark Mahaffey

If you are a business owner, you should make fire protection one of your highest priorities. Even though it may be easy to rebuild your business after the devastation by fire, it is not so easy to recover from the mental and emotional trauma. Losing your business to fire is not something to take likely.

In general, to sooner you can be made aware that a fire has broken out, the better. In fact, the first 5 minutes of a fire are the most critical, if you want to be able to put it out before it does much damage. Therefore, finding a way to detect the presence of fire and smoke is paramount to effective fire security.

This means that you should have components in your fire alarm system that will let you know as soon as possible that a fire has broken out. Early detection is critical. Heat detectors are one way to do this. Heat detectors have features inside the units that will activate when certain increases in temperature are detected.

Smoke detectors are also a smart way to be alerted to a fire's presence as soon as possible. You can buy three types of smoke detectors, and you will need to decide which one is best for you. Ionization detects large, fast burning fires and photoelectric smoke detectors detect slow burning fires.

But if you would to detect both kinds of fires (which is the best choice by far), you should choose to use combination smoke detectors. These will let you know about both kinds of fire, because it combines the features of both ionization and photoelectric. No matter what kind you get though, you should maintain it carefully.

Fire alarm system components that are not maintained will not function correctly. And if they do not function correctly, they will not be able to alert you if a fire breaks out. Be sure to keep fresh batteries in them on a regular schedule.
