How To Obtain EMDR Certification

By Eugenia Dickerson

If you intend including EMDR as a service in your practice, you have several ways in which to achieve this. To commence with gaining experience in the field, it is required of you to complete the Basic Training program and thereafter apply for EMDR certification.

Upon completion of the basic training, you can continue on to EMDR certification. There are certain criteria you have to meet to become eligible for EMDR certification. To apply for the certificate, you have to submit proof that you have completed the Basic Training program. A copy of a certificate of completion is required to be attached to your application.

You should be able to provide proof of a certification or registration as a professional in the mental health field. A photocopy of the documents that show you are able to practice independently need to be submitted with your application.

To apply, you need to have experience in your chosen practice field of at least two years. This should be relevant to the field of specialty indicated on your registration, license or certificate of professionalism. The documents you provide to prove your professionalism need to be notarized. If you are unable to provide proof of this experience, you have the opportunity to make a statement to this effect in writing and have that document notarized.

You should have conducted a minimum of 50 EMDR sessions with a minimum of 25 clients. This pre-requisite requires documentation to prove that you have this experience and the documents should be notarized. Once again, you do have the opportunity to write that you have fulfilled this requirement and have that particular document notarized accordingly. It is possible for you to combine your two years' experience and minimum sessions' declaration and have it notarized as a single document.

Qualification for the certificate requires that you have received a minimum of 20 hours of consultation from an Approved EMDR Consultant. The consultant should issue you with documentation which lists the amount of group and the amount of individual hours of consultation that was delivered. If you received consultation from more than one consultant, documentation should be obtained from each consultant.

Of the consulting hours you received, at least 10 should be individual and the rest may be allocated to small group hours. The groups should not have been larger than eight participants. These hours should be those you received after you completed the Basic Training.

To obtain your EMDR certification, you have to attach letters of recommendation from Approved Consultants regarding your use of EMDR whilst in the consulting relationship. Your colleagues or peers should provide you with letters of recommendation with regards to the use of the service in your professional practice. An additional requirement is to provide certificates related to the completion of 12 hours of further education in the field. The basic program does not fall into this category. There are approved training programs that are available after the basic training that will fall into this category.
