It is no secret that many people who are used to traveling by air often dread the experience. A typical airport terminal contains a massive amount of passengers, most of them jostling in between to make it to their flights in time. This notwithstanding, one experience you are certain to find infuriating is the body check that is a must for all passengers. The incidences below make for some of the most disdainful TSA horror stories.
In February 2012, a woman missed her flight as there were no female security agents present to search her. The woman, Jennifer Winning had arrived at the Sweetwater County Airport in Wyoming ready to take a flight to Colorado. According to the agents manning the security checkpoint, she could not board the plane as only male agents were available for the pat down.
She ended up watching her male counterparts get patted down before the flight took off. When she later inquired if her experience would have been different had she been a man, the security agents replied with a resounding yes. The story became a hot topic for the media. It has since ruled internet chat boards and websites.
As if this was not enough, a more damning incident had happened four years earlier, in May 2008. A female passenger claimed to have had her breasts exposed during a body search at the Corpus Christi International Airport. She ended up suing the federal government after claiming a TSA agent pulled her blouse down, exposing her breasts for all and sundry.
What makes this a truly shocking occurrence is that the officers present allegedly laughed while it all transpired. Her suit alleged untold humiliation and embarrassment. She eventually got awarded an unreported amount of cash as part of a settlement.
Another incident happened in March 2009, when a boy aged four had to take off his leg braces at the security terminal. This took place at the Philadelphia International Airport. While the security agents were aware that the boy could not walk without the braces, they still had him take them off. An apology was later issued by the TSA after a lot of public backlash.
An 8 year old boy also had to go through untold humiliation after being erroneously placed under a security watch list. This happened due to the fact that his name, Mickey Hicks, was similar to that of a man who had been deemed a security risk by the Department of Homeland Security. After arriving at the security terminal, the screening systems quickly picked up his name, forcing a frantic panic by the agents present. The other passengers and his parents looked astonished as he was taken through rigorous security checks.
Some experiences have involved a lot of pain, quite literally. Take the case of Mandi Hamlin, who was forced to take off her nipple rings by security staff. This was apparently because the rings had set off the metal detectors at the screening area. Despite offering to show the rings to one of the agents in private, her offer was denied flat out. This is certainly one experience you would not wish to go through.
