What You Need To Know About Golf Course Irrigation

By Pamela Young

A golf course can be described as a well-manicured field of lush-green grass with 18 holes. What makes the grass green is water and fertilizers. Since the soil may contain sufficient fertilizers already, it is the water that makes these fields what they are. In addition to that, regular mowing of the lawn is also needed. If the grass does not get sufficient water it will start withering, and nobody wants to play golf on a brown patch of grass. That is why it is important to invest in efficient golf course irrigation.

Grass needs to be watered on a regular basis to ensure it continues to grow and maintain a dark green color. Watering also helps to cool the grass, as well as the underlying sod to release the heat absorbed throughout the day. Ideally, watering should be done throughout the night when there is nobody playing in the field.

There must be an elaborate plumbing system around the field to ensure each part of the lawn gets water. There must also be several water points where water hoses can be connected to sprinklers. Another option is to install an automatic sprinkler system buried underground. The sprinklers can be programmed to come up when night falls and continue to water the field until the sun comes up.

It takes a lot of time, effort and special knowledge to design and install an efficient automatic sprinkler system. Furthermore, installation requires a lot of experience. After all, mistakes cannot be tolerated in such a costly project. That said, the right firm should have a lot of experience installing automatic sprinkler systems in parks and large commercial lawns.

Maintenance of the sprinkler system is also crucial. If there is a breakdown, prompt repairs must be carried out to ensure that every single section of the course is properly watered. Since some parts usually wear out fast, there is need for regular replacement of parts, particularly the mouths of the sprinklers.

There are many factors that investors and managers should consider when looking for a company to design and construct the irrigation system. The most important, however, is experience. Ideally, only firms that have years of experience in the field should be hired. Before, this is done, their portfolio also needs to be checked.

The right contractor for the job must have a team of highly experienced specialists who are certified to handle projects in their respective fields. Working with professionals will give you great value for your money. After all, you want to pay a reasonable amount of money to get the best possible results.

Cost is also a key concern. While establishing a golf course is a costly undertaking, you should look for ways to cut costs. For instance, you should make a shortlist of potential service providers and obtain detailed quotes from each one of them. The last step is to compare the rates and choose a firm with the most competitive rates.

Every contractor must be licensed to offer services to the public. For this reason, you need to do some background research to find out whether or not a particular firm is registered and licensed to offer the service you are seeking. If not, you should take your search elsewhere.
