Simple Steps On Performing A Repair Of Leaky Shower Pans

By Carl Graham

A shower pan is used as a base of the shower stall as well as for collecting water when taking a bath. Another purpose of this aside from draining the water is protecting the floor from rot, mold, or water intrusion. Types of this may vary from different manufacturers. This may either be a fiberglass, tiled, ceramic or porcelain, and metal pan but all of these have the same purposes and the same ways for installation.

The fiberglass is one of the common among all types. A fiberglass floor and a fiberglass wall are purchased separately but usually, people purchase them together. Repairing your leaky shower pans Columbia may be done easily by following these simple steps using the necessary tools and supplies.

Leaking pans will occur whenever there are cracks or leakages in a membrane. If it happens that you will see leaks, one best way is replacing rather than just repairing it. These cracked or these damaged pans will still continue on leaking after trying several ways of repair steps such as sealing the cracks. In this article, ways to replace damaged pans will be discussed.

First is purchasing the materials. Go into the hardware stores when purchasing the materials that are necessary for replacement. Remember not to purchase products which are being offered for stopping the leak since surely, it will not work and it will delay only your task of doing the replacement. Some materials that you will may include grout, liner, and tiles to necessarily reset your floor.

Second is to take the flooring up. Get a hammer and also a chisel and take the tiles up from your old shower. It is important for the tiles to be removed to let you access the pan from the underneath easily. Also, a flooring replacement is done only after a leaking pan is removed already.

Third, pull the both the membrane and shower pan. Before you pull up, know first the location of the membrane and the pan underneath. And also, pull up the sub flooring. After pulling up the said parts, provide a large fan for the floor to let flooring dry faster. This may either be left for about few hours or more or may leave it overnight. When it is already dried, place the plywood top replace the sub flooring.

Fourth is for the replacement of pans and membrane. When the sub flooring is replaced already, place the newly purchased tub and new membrane. Make sure that membrane covers completely the sub flooring for protecting it from future leakages. Using the rubber float and the grout, set both the new tile floor and pan.

Testing the result may take long, so make sure that you are there to witness the entire test. During the test, cover the drain with the use of a duct tape or try inserting any plug to stop the drain of water. Then after, fill in the floor with about one half bucket of water and leave for about 4 hours or more.

After several hours, remove the duct tape or plug and start observing how well the water is draining. Carefully observe the leaks from the area. In Columbia South Carolina, service companies may be contacted whenever you have been encountering problems about the testing.
