Finding And Buying Turntable Needles

By Stephen Schmidt

A large number of people will have a collection of records and they use a record player to play their vinyl discs. CD's and mp3 are now the preferred format for music and some items for record decks are difficult to source. When looking to buy turntable needles, there are various outlets to search where you will find your replacement stylus.

A good quality needle is an important part of a record player because it translates the music from the grooves in the disc into sound. A worn out or damaged stylus will never produce quality audio and will also seriously damage to your records. There is a huge range of styluses and it imperative that you find a compatible item when you need a replacement.

One of the best places to find a stylus for your turntable is at professional audio equipment store in your local area. These stores will have knowledgeable staff and they tend carry good stocks of these items. If the store does not have your particular needle in stock they may be able to order one in from the factory.

It is also worth browsing the internet when trying to find a stylus and there are a large number of online retailers to choose from. Before placing an order you will probably need a serial number or makers name to enable you to search. If you do not have any information, you can often email a color picture of your stylus to the company, and they will attempt to find a compatible one.

Web based auction sites are also useful when you are looking for a stylus and you may save money when you buy in this way. Their web pages will feature a quality color photograph and detailed description to allow you to make comparisons. If you have any concerns about an item, you can contact the seller directly, before placing a bid or making an offer.

If you are finding it difficult to find a replacement needle you can contact the manufacturer of your turntable if they are still in business. Many of the factories will be able to supply needles for new and old stock if they have them. If they do not have a stylus in stock, which matches yours, they may advise you on where to try and find a match.

Always try and use an original needle from the manufacturer of your deck if it is possible. There are firms that make non original styluses to suit some decks and these items will often do the job but care is needed when buying these. When shopping for a new needle, it is advisable to have the old one, to compare it with any that you plan to buy.

Record player needles are very fragile and it is important to care for them properly. When you purchase a brand new stylus it should be kept in the box until you fit it to your record deck. Always keep any receipts in case you need to exchange or return your stylus to the retailer.
