Finding ACT Prep Palm Beach Resources

By Olive Pate

The ACT, or American College Testing, refers to an standardized assessment that is usually taken by high school students interested in continuing their education and attending college. This is essentially a college readiness exam that is administered in the United States by the ACT. It is considered as part of most college admissions, which is why many students strive to get a good score. ACT prep Palm Beach is an option for people in Palm Beach FL who want to score their best on the assessment.

In 1959, Everette Franklin Lindquist was the first person to administer this test. It was in competition with the Scholastic Aptitude Test made available through College Board. Today, that test is more commonly known as the SAT. Initially, the ACT involved four tests: english, social studies, mathematics and natural sciences.

Social studies became reading in the late 1980s. This was also when the natural science part was re-named to become the science reasoning exam. Other small changes have been made over time, such as optional writing test that was included in 2005. In spring 2015, the option for taking the test on the computer became available, although there are still paper exams available in many places.

All colleges offering four years in America accept this test. Still, the emphasis or overall importance of the scores may vary based on the school. Some may consider other factors, such as extracurricular activities, class rank and GPA of potential students. All tests receive an individual score 1-36. There is a composite score which is the average of these four scores.

While this is primarily taken in the United States and Canada, it is also be available for students outside of these countries. The test can take up to 3 hours and 25 minutes to complete in full. This time excludes breaks. The english portion takes 45 minutes, math is allotted one hour, both reading and science take 35 minutes, and the optional writing portion is expected to last 30 minutes. It can be an intense exam for a person to take, which is why most people dedicate time to preparing for it.

There are multiple ways that prep can be done. Study guides, practice tests and tutors are some of the most common techniques used to help with studying. ACT offers test prep tools and there are plenty of books and articles online and in-print that provide students with valuable tips and information. People might even work with professionals who are able to provide them with necessary help.

The purpose of the test is to determine the general education and capability of high school students interested in college-level studies. The four exams are multiple choice and the optional writing part measure their ability at writing and planning a short essay. Essentially, the results of this test measure the readiness of a student to attend college.

It may be hard to do well in higher-level schooling. A lot of work is involved. Although these tests are used to see how prepared a student is for this workload, this is not the only indicator of abilities. People who dedicate themselves to their studies can achieve good results. Still, most colleges do consider applicant scores, especially at prestigious schools.
