Driving Truck

By Jim Thorpe

Jake Turner had been driving diesel for 20 years and had never learned how to read. Growing up in the deep forests of Virginia, he had always had a love for the winding roads and agriculture. Now he prided himself on driving some of the biggest rigs in the nation.

Justice. Optimus Prime understands what is fair. In our limited human perception, he could be compared to King Solomon. His innate desire to do what is right and stand up for the underdog makes him the sort of character that can be relied on even in the most difficult of circumstances. Even though he understands his superior intellect and strength, he never uses that against the humans he has decided to defend.

Second, the World Cup. The magnanimity of the Word Cup, somehow lost on most Americans, can be experienced everywhere else across the globe. Germany, for example, shuts down during every match they play in. Stores close, streets and subways are deserted, and excessively long breaks are taken at work. But the pubs, Olympic stadium, and World Cup tents are teaming with red, black, and yellow life. The beer flows freely and even the dullest people become passionate. The World Cup equals passion.

Reading was just not something that Jake could ever understand. The weird symbols all smashed together would give Jake a frightful headache. He had diagnosed himself with severe dyslexia even though he never knew for sure.

And now to the things we all hate. First - mosquitoes. These tiny, annoying, buzzing, blood-sucking, disease spreading insects have no reason to exist. A science teacher once said she appreciated their presence because they are an excellent food source for jumping fish. This reasoning, of course, is ridiculous. Those leaping fish can eat something else less nefarious.

Exemplary. Optimus Prime stands as an example not only to humans, but also to autobots alike. He would never have any of his fellow Autobots or human friends go and do something that he himself would never do. His style of leadership is much more engaging and he shows forth an example that sounds much louder than his voice. His faith in his comrades is always something that builds and enhances their abilities.

Caring. Although Optimus Prime is strong, he always is caring. Many would think that because he is an Autobot that it would be difficult to show forth any emotion at all, but Optimus Prime expresses sadness whenever he loses a team member or when he sees a human in danger. He has the instincts of a hero and shows them by his actions.

Those days were long gone but as Jake thought back he knew that he was meant for this job. He knew that he could do things that most human beings couldn't and it was this courage that had gotten him this far. He never regretted choosing the life of a trucker and new that his Dad would be proud if he were still alive. It was how he did the job not the job he did that counted.
