A Selection Guide For Used Directional Drilling Reamers

By Thomas Cox

When looking for HDD tools, you should decide whether you want pre-owned tools or new ones. Buying new HDD equipment is however costly and needs one to have a considerable amount of money. If you need the machine, and you do not have enough cash to buy a new one, look for a pre-owned tool that is still functional. Buying Directional Drilling Reamers that are used may seem easy, but it is not. This is because there are several things to consider. For instance, it is essential to check the shaft, diameter, thread type, and style. The following are several things to look for when buying used tools.

You should consult an experienced person before you set out for shopping Check the drill pipe to make sure it is in good condition. Checking whether the thread profile is worn out is paramount. This will prevent you from buying equipment that is damaged or worn out. Thus, make sure you have inspected the rod to avoid losing lots of money and time.

Ensure that you have also checked whether the hydraulic system is functional. This is essential because the pressure must be set correctly. In case the specifications are wrong, start looking for another tool. Tools with incorrect pressure specifications will cause more problems when drilling. Therefore, the tool will require repair that may be costly. Hence, checking whether the pressure is within the limit that is recommended is crucial.

Check the rack as well. Before you purchase the tool, make sure you have checked its rack and pinion. The carriage usually runs on the rack when it is being used. Hence, this system wears out after some time. Since there are different models, some racks will become damaged faster than others. Thus, buy a machine only after checking the tool critically.

Another critical part to check is the makeup system. This system can also be called a wrench or vice. The pipes should be screwed together when you are drilling out. It is also essential to check if the tool is working well when you are pulling back. You should test the pieces to check if they are moving as they are supposed to.

Take the time to check the reamer and drill head as well. Adapters are usually present at the tail of the housing or at the front part of the machine. This makes it easy to change the threads and use the equipment for various drill setups. Avoid tools that have adapters that have been welded in place.

The rock tooling is also critical to check before buying the used tools. Usually, the roller cones on the reamer should be tight when turning. The side to side movement will tell you whether the bearings are broken. Replacing the cones can be very costly and time-consuming.

Ensure that you are careful when looking for these tools because making a mistake will cost you dearly. Do not buy any equipment from a dealer that does not allow you to visit his shop. You should check out the shop and determine whether the dealer is reliable.
