Tips About Dry Ice Blasting Services

By John Parker

There has been an increase in the invention of methods for cleaning surfaces and objects in the previous years. In cleaning industry, the mostly used method for cleaning is dry ice cleaning. Dry ice blasting falls under carbon dioxide cleaning. The surface is cleaned using carbon dioxide in solid form. A lot of pressure is put on the gas to solidify it. It is then directed towards the surface to be cleaned under high pressure. Here are facts about dry ice blasting services.

Apart from dry ice blasting, there can be the use of ice blasting in cleaning the surface where ice-water is used. This is an abrasive cleaning method which is similar to the other methods such as soda, plastic bead, and sand blasting. Apart from those there are other abrasives which can also be used. The only variation between these methods of cleaning surfaces is that there is the use of medium in one cleaning method.

In this method, the pellets of dry ice are propelled by the blasting equipment at very high speeds. Comparatively, pellets produced from solid carbon dioxide gas are very soft and less dense to those of other materials such as sand and soda. When the material makes impact with a surface, it sublimes almost instantly. This means that there is no solid material left at the place of work.

The sublimation of the pellets reduces the amount of kinetic energy that is relocated to the cleaned surface. Reduction of the energy being transferred reduces the chances of damage of the surface being cleaned by the pellets. This implies that this cleaning method can also be used in the cleaning of delicate surfaces such as glass. Due to sublimation there are no residues left on the surface being cleaned after the process.

Absorption of more heat from the surface leads to production of shear stresses. This occurs during sublimation. Thermal shock causes shear stress. Dirt or contaminants flake easily because of the absorption of heat from a surface. This causes improvement in cleaning ability of the abrasive. The effectiveness and efficiency of this cleaning process is increased by thermal conductivity of a surface.

This technique finds use in many applications. It is particularly important in the cleaning and sanitation of processing equipment in food industry because it is effective at removing Salmonella enteritidis, Listeria monocytogenes, and E. Coli among many other microorganisms. Microorganisms are removed effectively to a point that they cannot be detected through conventional microbiological techniques. The method can also be used to clean equipment without having to disassemble them.

There are no fire and electrical hazards caused by this technique. It is mostly used in aerospace and semiconductor industries. The growing popularity of this method has increased mostly in some of the other industries. The method is said to be suitable for use because of its advantages. It is a suitable method to be used in cleaning of many solvent type methods of cleaning.

Carbon dioxide is a very dangerous substance if its concentration rises above one percent. It is also known to cause asphyxia by displacing oxygen. As such, this method of cleaning should be used in well-ventilated rooms. Exhaust vents should be installed close to the ground so that the gas can be vented outside easily.
