Most of the points are normally on land. The determined points have several uses. To be a licensed surveyor a person requires either higher education beyond degree level or a degree. To join an association of professionals one must pass the set qualification test. The other way to join a professional association is through attaining a certifying status. A chartered surveyor is permitted to manage and plan surveys. The work they either supervise or work on must meet certain set standards.

Requirements for licensing usually vary from one jurisdiction to the next. However, the requirements tend to remain consistent within national borders. After completing a degree course, one is needed to pass a comprehensive exam. After that, they should go through on-the-job training before being granted a license to practice.
