Young people in America know from a young age that they will have to perform well in special tests designed to assess their readiness for further education. Most of the top colleges and universities will not entertain applications from prospective students if they have not performed well in these tests. A good score can secure a place at a top university and this can be important for the future success of the student. When starting SAT prep Palm Beach FL students buy only the very best study aids.

When the SAT tests were introduced in the early twenties of the previous century, they were meant to determine whether a student is ready to pursue a qualification at a higher educational institution. This is still its purpose, although some changes have been made from time to time. It used to be known as the Scholastic Aptitude Test, but these days the acronym stands for nothing in particular.

It is true that the tests are not mandatory. In fact, many universities and colleges do not require applicants to submit their test score or to even take the test in the first place. Most of the top universities will not consider new applicants without a good score, however. These universities wish to award their available places to the best of the best, to students that will further contribute to the reputation of the institution.

Serious students vie for a place at a top institution, and with very good reason. Not only will they receive a superior education, but the very fact that a person has graduated from a well regarded university opens doors. Top corporations do most of their recruitment on the campuses of these universities. Promising students receive valuable exposure during their breaks and they are most likely to be offered the best jobs when they graduate.

The test itself is strenuous. It lasts for three hours and during this time students have to answer numerous questions in three main areas of interest. These areas are writing skills, critical reading and mathematics. Only a short rest between each session is allowed. Students can score a maximum of two thousand five hundred and a minimum of six hundred points.

There are official guidelines designed to help students prepare, but most also opt for one or more other sources of assistance. There are numerous books, websites and special software programs that all aim to help students do well in the test. In fact, this industry has grown into quite a large one. Students and their parents willingly pay for these aids because they consider the results to be important to the future success of the student.

Experts have warned that many books, manuals and study aids on sale contain little more than what is already supplied by the College Board. In fact, most students do not actually need additional aids or resources. When considering such material, , however, it is important to make sure that it will actually be of value.

Some professionals warn that the importance of these tests is overrated. Students often fail or perform poorly because they are over anxious and under tremendous pressure from their parents, schools and peers to do well. They should remember that they can sit for the test again at another stage, if they wish.
